Be a Phenomenon 

Human Potential    

Human potential is what we can be and an interesting fact is that we only use 5% of our brains. Very intelligent people did very strange things but workout out of the box. Thomas Edison was up for four hours and slept in 15-minute increments. There is a book called “Innovate Like Edison” by Michael J. Gelb, which is a great book to read to become a better innovator. We are paid the most in any job when you’re paid to think such as a consultant, engineer and etc.

Focus

We are the most directly connected generation and have the ability to multitask but not multi focus. Phones detract from focus and technology and Internet companies win when they distract people. Thinking about that is interesting because Facebook wins when it keeps people distracted and to me is one of the most distracting sites for a college student and says that it is winning big time. When we study we should study we should study single-mindedly and take all distractions away and we will learn and simply do more.

Task

There is something called Parkinson’s Law that can be further read in the Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. The law is about perceived complexity that means that the longer we have to finish something, the harder the task seems. When you finish a task it gives you energy but when you stop it drains your energy thinking about it.

Master your Craft

Many people don’t know what they want to do in life so we need to tap into our latent talent. We need to have single-minded focus to better ourselves and when everything is important, nothing is important. There is a book called “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell who also authored the Tipping Point. In Outliers it talks about the difference between Beethoven, Tiger Woods and other great masters at their niche and other less successful people is that they practiced at least 10,000 hours to get there. It is an interesting number that 10,000 hours allows you to master something.

If you don’t know what you want to do or your talent then my suggestion is to try everything you possibly can if you don’t like it don’t waste your time on it but move to something else and you can also do informational interviews with people to find out what they do and how they like it.

Surround Yourself with Yourself

We need to find a group of friends that makes us better. You will make the average of your 5 closest friends. You’ll also be as smart and productive as your 5 closest friends. That being said it would be good to have solid friends that can help you progress forward and not drag you down, as you need iron to sharpen a knife. The engineers in NASA aren’t the best engineers in their area but are the best who work good together.

Personal Thoughts

My personal thoughts about the workshop is that it was one of the best workshops I have attended out of the dozens I have attended over my time at college. I believe that the workshop can be summarized and can further better someone if they read three books:

Four-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
